Nanotechnology + Fashion

One of my classmates in Nanotechnology class had an idea about clothes that are made out of nanomaterials. That idea has brought my attention to fashion with nanotechnology.

For a lot of people, textile is often considered as works of art that is meant for aesthetic value. However with nanotechnology, textiles are workable media with large available surface area and the potential to improve in function. Manipulating of nanoscale phenomena to create synergies between natural fibers and nanoscience could result in preserving appearance and comfort.

One of the example of nanotechnology and fashion is fabric that is resistant to spills. Normally, spills could ruin clothing very easily, but with this hydrophobic function traditional cotton and silk fabrics could be saved from forever-ruining liquids. Not only is resists spills, it could also resist wrinkles, dry fast and breathe. Instead of using topical treatments(which wears off), the chemicals in nanotechnology actually form a molecular bond with the fabric.

There is also a dress and a jacket made with silver(Ag) and palladium(Pd) nanoparticles with antibacterial, and air-purifying qualities. Below is a link where it explains how the Ag and Pd nanoparticles work to create that function.

Nanotechnology + company

Nanotechnology brings great benefits to the society with improvements in drugs, pesticide delivery, renewable energy systems, and the quality and safety of food. However, like anything else in the world, nanomaterials needs to be studied more to ensure human health and environmental safety. Since they are so small in size, particles are more likely to penetrate in living systems.
It would be helpful to encourage the new and smaller companies to participate in regulating the nanomaterials and present options for better design of the nanotechnology, since the larger companies uses traditional model of company dynamics and technology lifecycle.

Nanotechnology company that has around 100 employee located in Palo Alto, California.
Nanosys holds over 750 patents and patent applications for technology, products, and processes that can revolutionize a vast array of industries from Flash memory and medical devices to LED lighting and specialized nano-surface coatings, including super-hemostatic, super-hydrophilicsuper-adhesive, and super-hydrophobic.

NanoWorld is a small to mid-size company, based in Switzerland with a little over 50 employees, that manufactures tips for Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM).

Since nanotechnology is an engine for growth for the 21st century, I wonder if I should also invest in stock for nanotechnology!

These are some of the best nanotechnology companies stocks 2015

  • Altair Nanotechnologies Inc. ALTI
  • MagForce Nanotechnologies MF6.DE
  • Shrink Nanotechnologies, Inc. INKN.PK
  • Ligtwave Logic, Inc. LWLG.OB
  • Arrowhead Research Corp. ARWR
  • Harris & Harris Group, Inc. TINY
  • NVE Corp. NVEC
  • Nanoventure N.V. N9V.DE
  • NanoLogiz Inc. NNLX.PK
  • Ultratech, Inc. US1.DE
The popularity of nanotehcnology is increasing according to the search interests. I am certain that nanotechnology will be more popular as it brings more improved materials to the markets.

It is awesome that I got to take Rita Blaik's class in Artcenter College of Design, because without her class, I would not have know about the impact that nanotechnology brings to our lives.
